Does a Vegan (Pro)-Collagen Supplement Improve Skin Health?

A common question at the Kahn Center centers on the role of collagen supplements for skin and hair health, artery health, and bone health. Most collagen supplements are made from animals like cows and we do not recommend those. There has been limited science of vegan options

There is a new vegan collagen made of an innovative plant-based collagen biomimetic that contains a variety of plant extracts, including asiaticoside, ginsenoside, and through fermented amino acids, which stimulates the natural process for type I collagen synthesis.  It includes Gotu Kola (asciatica centellicum) which is also found in Arterial Protect, one of the key suppelments recommended at the Kahn Center.

STUDY

In this study, a unique vegan collagen powder was used to explore the skin beautifying effects in the human body. There was a placebo group (n = 30) and a vegan collagen group (n = 30). Subjects were informed to consume 1 sachet of the sample daily for 8 weeks. Skin conditions were measured at week 0, week 4 and week 8.

RESULTS

The results showed that vegan collagen significantly increased collagen density and elasticity by 4.7% and 5.1% and decreased wrinkles, texture, and pores by 27.5%, 20.1%, and 12.3% compared to the placebo group. In addition, the hydration and lightness were increased by 4.3% and 2.3% compared to the placebo group.

CONCLUSION

Vegan collagen has the potential to improve skin collagen density, elasticity, texture, wrinkles, pores, hydration, and lightness.

Vegan collagen is mainly composed of amino acids (90 %), and plant extracts, including asiaticoside, and ginsenosides. Asiaticosides are active constituents found in the Centella asiatica plant (gotu kola).

As we are all increasingly concerned about naturalness and sustainability, and future biomimetic collagen products may use environmentally friendly production methods and natural ingredients to meet the demand for sustainability.

This new vegan collagen powder is available at the Kahn Center in Bingham Farms, Michigan. We stil rely on optimal nutrition rich in Vitamin C, Lysine and Proline to also support ample collagen production through foods and powder supplements.
